Le librerie sono un po’ come degli aeroporti in cui bisogna solo scegliere la destinazione che piu’ si preferisce e imbarcarsi per un nuovo viaggio.
Trascorro minuti, ore, semplicemente a camminare tra gli scaffali polverosi e le luci soffuse delle piccole librerie indipendenti, sfogliando distrattamente libri che mi hanno incuriosita per le loro copertine e respirando l’odore della carta ingiallita dagli anni; migliaia di volumi diversi, uno accanto all’altro, in attesa che li apra, per condurmi verso mirabolanti imprese.
Quando poi il negozio di libri in questione e’ tra i piu’ originali ed eclettici al mondo e per di piu’ perduto in un dedalo infinito di strade di un paese da sogno, allora perdo completamente la cognizione del tempo.
L’Atlantis Bookstore si trova a Oia, il villaggio da cartolina di Santorini, all’interno di una delle tipiche casette bianche in stile cicladico, affacciata sul Mare Egeo e sulla caldera.
Nel 2002 Oliver e Craig, due dei proprietari, trascorsero una settimana sull’isola e come succede a molti se ne innamorarono. Una sera, su di giri dopo numerosi bicchieri di vino greco e non trovando libri in inglese da nessuna parte, decisero che avrebbero aperto una libreria a Santorini (lo dico sempre che le decisioni prese sotto l’effetto del buon vino sono sempre le migliori!).
Terminati gli studi universitari, nell’inverno del 2004, attraversarono l’Europa in macchina e guidarono fino alla “perla nera dell’Egeo” per realizzare il loro sogno, insieme ad altri giovani artisti e letterati provenienti da Cipro, Inghilterra e Stati Uniti.
La libreria, ispirata alla nota Shakespeare and Company di Parigi, apri’ poco dopo e grazie alla creativita’ di Oliver, Craig e del resto del gruppo e alla collocazione unica nel suo genere, divenne sin da subito un luogo da non perdere per gli appassionati del settore e un punto di riferimento per l’editoria locale, con volumi in inglese, francese, italiano, cinese e greco, una collezione di prime edizioni rarissime e volumi usati antichi e spesso introvabili.
Una ripida rampa di scale conduce all’interno del negozio. Il benvenuto mi viene dato da un adorabile gattone sonnecchioso e da una frase del poeta americano Longfellow che non potrebbe descrivere meglio l’atmosfera dell’Atlantis Bookstore: The love of learning, the sequestered nooks, and all the sweet serenity of books (l’amore per l’apprendimento, gli angolini appartati e la dolce serenita’ dei libri).
Non una libreria ma quasi la casa di amici. In reata’ i proprietari (che si alternano durante l’anno) ci vivono per davvero qui e dietro ad uno scaffale si scorgono dei letti e un cucinino. Cani e gatti, insieme ad un arredamento tutto hand-made, infondono all’ambiente una sensazione di familiarita’ e cordiale accoglienza. La terrazza panoramica offre una vista sul vulcano e sul resto dell’isola che lascia senza parole.
Sul soffitto e sulle pareti sono riportate frasi, poesie e citazioni significative, oltre ad un’interessante linea del tempo con appuntati tutti gli eventi che hanno fatto la storia della libreria, dalla sua nascita al giorno d’oggi.
Da anni l’Atlantis Bookstore ospita piccoli spettacoli teatrali, letture di poesie, incontri con gli autori, proiezioni cinematografiche e il famoso Caldera Festival, una manifestazione artistico-letteraria che richiama scrittori di fama mondiale.
E’ inoltre tramite il loro sito web che ho acquistato l’unica mappa/guida alternativa e insolita su Santorini, con preziosi consigli in chiave ironica di questo stravagante gruppo di expat.
Il mio specialissimo posto del cuore a Oia, dove non si vendono semplicemente libri ma viaggi immaginari, dove non esistono cataloghi digitali ma solo raccomandazioni fatte a mano, dove non si trova mai quello che si sta cercando ma solo quello che solletica la nostra fantasia e curiosita’. Un luogo dove lasciarsi cullare dalla “dolce serenita’ dei libri”, immerso in un paesaggio da sogno.
La libreria va pensata come una farmacia. Per i dolori dell’esistenza.
