Il filosofo greco Platone (e molti altri dopo di lui) riteneva che l’isola fosse in realta’ un gruppo di isole creato da Poseidone per la sua amata, con una collina al centro circondata da un anello d’acqua, a sua volta racchiuso in un cerchio di terra, seguito da un altro anello d’acqua e cosi’ via per un totale di nove anelli d’acqua e nove di terra.
Qui si sviluppo’ una ricca e prospera civilta’ di nobili uomini governati da una societa’ utopistica senza eguali, ma una catastrofica eruzione vulcanica avvenuta piu’ di mille anni prima di Cristo, sommerse completamente Atlantide che risulta tutt’oggi dispersa.
Il passo dal mito alla realta’ e’ breve.
Nel 1967 un gruppo di archeologi ha infatti scoperto a Santorini (nell’attuale villaggio di Akrotiri) i resti di un’antichissima citta’, quasi completamente intatta, sepolta dalla lava intorno al 1500 a.C. A cio’ si aggiunge il fatto che migliaia di anni fa il nome dell’isola era Strongyli (“cerchio”), richiamando la struttura ad anelli concentrici di Atlantide.
Miti e leggende a parte, a Santorini c’e’ davvero qualcosa di inspiegabilmente leggendario e idilliaco.
Ad affascinarmi inizialmente credo siano stati i contrasti molto marcati che caratterizzano l’isola: in primis la presenza ravvicinata del vulcano che per quanto sembri innocuo in realta’ ha provocato devastanti eruzioni e tsunami nel corso della storia ed e’ tutt’ora l’unico attivo dell’intera area; di minor impatto ma sicuramente inusuale e’ la contrapposizione tra il blu cobalto, intenso e brillante, del Mar Egeo, la terra vulcanica di colore nero e il bianco scintillante delle tipiche casette arroccate sulle scogliere che, a guardarle da lontano, sembrano quasi montagne innevate; ed infine la quasi completa mancanza di vegetazione (tranne le viti che crescono in abbondanza e di qualita’) che conferisce all’isola un aura soprannaturale, quasi mistica.
Se ad attrarmi inizialmente sono stati i contrasti, a farmi innamorare sono decisamente state le sfumature, come quelle aranciate e violacee del cielo terso al tramonto contemplate dal faro di Akrotiri, quelle rosee e tenui del crepuscolo, che avvolgono la caldera e i villaggi affacciati su di essa e rendono ogni cena piu’ romantica, quelle del blu che tingono il cielo, che brillano sul mare, che spiccano sulle cupole delle centinaia di chiesette ortodosse disseminate sull’isola.
Una settimana e’ sicuramente un tempo ingiusto per esplorare la “Perla nera dell’Egeo”, ma nei pochi giorni a disposizione ho cercato il piu’ possibile di prendere le distanze dalle mete piu’ turistiche e dai luoghi comuni; di provare a cercare l’autenticita’ nei villaggi meno conosciuti, come Finikia, Pyrgos e Vothonas, dove la vita quotidiana dei suoi abitanti scorre indisturbata; di assaggiare tutti i prodottti tipici; di fare turismo responsabile senza mai cedere alla comodita’ delle Donkey Ride, che personalmente detesto e considero maltrattamento; di inseguire tutte le cupole blu avvistate all’orizzonte per finire con lo scoprire chiese dalla bellezza disarmante.
